Voodoo Six - Underworld Camden London 4th November 2010
I haven't looked forward to a gig more in seven months than VOODOO SIX back in London on a headline tour. This was more than just a gig it was a gathering of the clans as fans from previous gigs all turned up and shared the same excitement as me. Outside the Underworld, Emma from Totalrock Radio was filming and interviewing fans (myself on microphone duties). What was also great was members of V6 and support band The Treatment mixing with the fans outside, lots of handshaking and hugs and encouragement for the gig ahead.
At the front with fellow fans and friends , The Treatment came onstage to great applause and gave us a storming set of catchy rock tunes from the forthcoming cd (Feb 2011 I believe), these young lads from Cambridge have a bright future and I can't wait to hear the finished cd when available.
Voodoo Six hit the stage to a great welcome from the fans, and they did not disappoint us with a brilliant set, I have seen the band 25+ times now and this was up there with the best of performances, every song a title contender and the band pumped up enjoying every moment.
'Like The Others Did' kicked off the set in furious rocking style, Luke now firmly cemented in centre stage, the confidence now oozing from him as he is understandably more relaxed in his role. The set contained all the tracks from the superb Fluke? cd plus 4 others from First Hit For Free, the surprise being my favourite 'One More Day'. 'I Am The Sun' sounded as good as I first heard it live three years ago, now showcasing the bands talents with guitar interplay between Matt and Chris with also a bass slot for Tony, Grav's drumming was awesome tonight, no better in my opinion than on the slower number 'Underneath My Skin' which by the looks on people's faces went down extremely well , it also shows Luke's softer vocal style and will be a set favourite for years to come.
Crowd participation came along in form of 'Something For You' where Luke divides the crowd up for an old fashioned sing-song culminating with him growling out the end into a blistering guitar solo.
'Killer' like the cd featured the taped movie monlogue intro and a killer chorus to match, the crunching riff of 'Live Again' made me reach for my earplugs, wonderful song that hits the mark, rock music should always sound like this. The set closes with the double header of 'Doing Me Wrong' and 'Long Way From Home' another set of catchy choruses and killer riffs.
The encore was a new favourite of mine 'Mountain' (thanx Luke for the mention), this has another great riff and is destined surely for large amounts of radio play with 'Body & Soul'
Everyone in the band played their hearts out and the crowd realised this by giving them brilliant encouragement, Chris & Matt were terrific as the twin guitar attack, Tony a powerhouse on the bass, Grav just bloody awesome on the skins and Luke is fastly turning into one of the great rock frontmen. Bands are only as good as the songs they write and perform and boy do Voodoo Six have some great songs.
