Since the release of the ‘And So It Begins’ EP, the band has gone through a line up change with a new bass/keyboard player Jack Timms joining Virgil McMahon on guitars and Gabriel McMahon drums, the power trio chemistry now shows the results of the touring and song writing to give us The Radium.
These lads have a maturity in the 11 original songs on here that defies their very young age with a style of music that veers to the rockier sound of the blues/rock genre, also leaving room for some swampy and funky interludes.
The two instrumentals here, ‘The Storm’ and ‘Silver Giver’ shows an influence of Philip Sayce , who I know is a favourite of Virgil, showing the two sides of the guitar playing from up-tempo to slowed down melodic. Opener ‘Working Man’ is a track worthy of kicking off any cd with an acoustic swampy intro breaking into the drum beat and then rock guitar and bass forming an infectious melody to hook you through the song. The track is also enriched by some background keyboards that give it the extra lift at the right time as Virgil nails down a superb guitar break. ‘Refuse To Believe’, ‘Backstabber’, ‘Bad Girl’ and 'Cold Hearted Woman', feature a great band sound from super guitar riffs, bass lines and terrific drums from Gabriel , especially on the latter track. ‘Racing With Life’ along with ‘Low Down And Dirty’ possesses the modern funk based sound that I really connect with; these songs should sound great when played live. The paced is slowed a little for the glorious swampy blues groove of ‘88’ this is one of my favourites very reminiscent of Ry Cooder. My favourite track on the cd of many wonderful tunes is ‘Fell To The Floor’, this, to my ears, is the most mature song on here, structured very much in the same way that wouldn’t sound amiss on any of the two Black Country Communion cd’s, I cannot praise this track high enough.
The boys have come along way in a very short time; this cd will cement their status as Britain’s high hopes for the future of blues/rock music. Everyone involved should be mighty proud of what has been achieved here.
