TODD SHARPVILLE BAND + GUESTS - 100 CLUB LONDON 26TH OCTOBER 2011
For those who attended this gig know that they witnessed something extremely special, as Todd made his first London appearance since his Charlotte Street Blues gig in 2010. It was well worth the wait as Todd and the band ripped through two sets of some of the best blues you will hear anywhere this year. The gig was also a launch for the new special edition one disc version of the brilliant Porchlight cd, featuring a couple of bonus tracks, the original which was released late last year as a double cd to much critical acclaim.
Tables and chairs set out at the front and standing room behind , the club was very well attended with punters as well as friends and family of Todd's and quite a few musicians to see the band , featuring Mark Mondesir, Dave Oliver, and Scott Wiber kick off proceedings on time . We were treated to an awesome blues version of theStones 'You Can't Always Get What You Want as well as Peter Green's 'Need Your Love So Bad' which has never sounded so good away from the master.
Porchlight material was aired as well with 'Used' featuring a great intro riff and the vitriolic 'Can't Stand The Crook', ‘Busted In Pieces’and a wonderful ‘If That Ain’t Love What Is’.
We also had guests, firstly Marcus Bonfanti guesting on two songs, joining Todd on guitar for a rousing version of ‘Lousy Husband, (But A Real Good Dad)’ and then with Todd on piano , they were joined by the supreme vocals of David Mcalmont for ‘Can’t Stand Up For Falling Down’
After the band including David and Scott did some solo breaks, Mark decided to take a drum solo that almost disintegrated the kit such was the intensity. More guests this time with the exuberant harp of Paul Lamb and then the evergreen Earl Green who joined the stage for some vocals including some scatting.
This is one of the few gigs I have attended where everyone in the crowd was smiling all the way through, a true class performance from all on the stage. Todd won’t leave it go another year before he hits London again, he is just too good for that.
As for myself , I have been to a number of gigs this year , this ranks there up with the best.
