TIM AVES & WOLFPACK - THE WOLFPACK BURNHAM SESSIONS
The long awaited first album by one of the most exciting acts on the UK Blues circuit, Tim Aves and Wolfpack have finally released ‘The Wolfpack Burnham Session’, more than seventy minutes of raw, primal blues of twelve studio tracks and a live bonus track.
Players on the album are the regular Wolfpack road band featuring; Tim Aves (Rockin’ Armadillos, Automatic Slim) on vocals, harmonica, guitar, plus former ‘dillos bandmates, Rob Barry on bass guitar, Paul Lester on drums, Joel Fisk (Hokie Joint) on guitar, and renowned New Orleans blues piano man Dale Storr guests on three tracks.
Wolfpack’s repertoire of 21st Century reworking’s of songs made famous by legendary Chicago bluesman Howlin’ Wolf is represented in no fewer than nine tracks, these range from the shuffle blues of ‘Poor Boy’and the joyous up-tempo ‘Hidden Charms’ to a wonderful fourteen minute live version of ‘Smokestack Lightning’. The idea of the band is to give the great Wolf tracks a new modern twist while not detracting from the spirit in which they were originally created.
The album also features a long awaited recording of Tim’s self –penned ‘Robert Johnson’s Shoes’, plus a powerful take on The FabulousThunderbirds’ slow-burning blues of ‘Fulltime Lover’, Doyle Branhall’s anthem ‘Life By The Drop’ and Robert Johnson’s ‘Kindhearted Woman’. The band really shine on 'Tail Dragger' , every player shows their skills on this track featuring some excellant piano work from cd guest Dale Storr, '300 lbs Of Heavenly Joy' has some great subtle slide work on it.
The bulk of the album was recorded live in a single day at Saint Studios under the excellent engineering skills of Pete Crisp, which has been treated with the same energy that you will hear at one of their live gigs.
I have seen Wolfpack live from its inception and this album is a brilliant representation of what you will get at a gig. Do yourselves a favour and get a copy, you will not be disappointed.
