‘Ruby Electric’ is a unique album that features a collection of songs divided into two different volumes, these songs recorded with some of Philip’s favourite musicians and friends.
Volume One was recorded live in the studio in Hollywood, containing songs that were waiting for the right circumstances for release, have been remixed and re-mastered, the first one, ‘Let The love In’ is a duet with former employer Melissa Etheridge and featuring Fred Mandel on keyboards. This is a rocker and sets the standard for the first set of new songs.
‘Daydream Tonight’ is an alternate take on the track that was on Innerevolution, a live studio version that I actually prefer, in my opinion this is the way that Sayce should be recorded, allowing the guitar sound to flow the way it does during his legendary live shows. You can still the influences that echo in Philip’s guitar playing, especially Hendrix and Healey on tracks ‘Set Us Free’ and ‘King Of New Mexico’. Unfamiliar territory for Sayce fans will be the semi-religious track’ Were You There’ which follows the story of the crucifixion and features an extraordinary guitar break that you will want to play over again. The title track will surely become a live favourite on the upcoming UK tour; it rocks along giving ample opportunity for Phillip to throw some lead breaks with effects all around the venues.
Volume Two is what we fans have been waiting for, a live recording of Philip and his great band tearing up the stage in all its glory. Recorded on his last European tour in France, Germany and Holland, mixed by the legendary Eddie Kramer.
Starting off with the intro and very Hawkwind-esque ‘Helios’ the band launch into double body bruisers of ‘One Foot In The Grave’ and the funky ‘Powerful Thing’ already massive favourites in the live set. Next up are two songs that in my opinion every person picking up a guitar should listen to and learn, ‘Slipaway’ and his signature song, the glorious ‘Alchemy’. ‘Alchemy’ along with Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Albatross’ are my two favourite guitar instrumental tracks, it is just the most beautiful guitar playing you will ever see and hear in concert. ‘Take You Away’, ‘Angels Live Inside’ keeps up the high standard of musicianship before the grunge feel of Neil Young’s ‘Cinnamon Girl’finishes off an excellent Volume Two.
Philip Sayce quotes ‘ I hope you feel the passion, joy, excitement and honesty that went into each of these performances, both in the studio and live in concert’, well having witnessed many of his live shows , I can bear witness to that statement, an extraordinary guitar player with a stunning band who always deliver the goods on stage.
