I was told about this guy earlier this year by Tony Newton (Voodoo Six) who first saw him when he used to run a record label in LA.. So I thought , why not!!
On entering the venue I spotted the man Philip and he came over to me for a chat and signed my cd. Very charming and sincere person , very rare in muso world these days.
The 2 support acts were good but I cannot remember their names at this time.
Just prior to Mr Sayce blowing our minds, Tony Newton and Matt Pearce from Voodoo Six joined me at the table with George (V6 photo & video man). Great banter and news catch up.
Philip and band blasted onto the stage with 'One Foot In The Grave/Powerful Thing'
My jaw just dropped and stayed there for about 100 mins of guitar magic. I've seen many of the greats in my time , but this guy was a breath of fresh air, yes some will say he sounds like so& so on that & this, but he blends it all so well and twists it about. He has the pomp of Hendrix, the swagger of Prince and the funkyness of primetime Kravitz.
'Over My Head' , 'Blood On Your Hands', and 'Dream Away' were despatched with much crowd appreciation. Also on the menu was a 10min + version of 'Slipaway' just amazing stuff . Most of his cd 'Peace Machine' was played plus 2 new songs from his next release early next year. He also provided good inbetween song banter with the crowd and stories behind said tunes.
His drummer was awesome bashing the crap out of them, and the admission alone was worth it for the bass players moves on stage - hilarious.
Philip then played a cover of Neil Youngs 'Cinnamon Girl' giving it a guitar overload...terrific stuff.
He encored with the beautiful 'Alchemy' one of the best instrumentals I've heard.
He also said he will be back for a UK tour in May 2010 in support of new cd 'Innerevolution. I for one cannot wait.
