Last time I saw Philip was at Dingwalls in October 2009 and I haven't stopped talking about it since, so the chance to him again was a no-brainer. I managed to catch Philip just after his soundcheck for a brief chat and signing of his excellant new cd 'Innerevolution', the obligatory photo opportunity as well. His warning to me was to get some earplugs for the gig as it was going to be very loud and he wasn't wrong.
The support came from Dutchman Stefan Schill , he kicked off his set in blues/rock vein with catchy hooks in music and vocals and is definitely one to lookout for if he is playing a gig near you. He plays with great enthusiasm ably backed by 3 other band members playing drums, bass and keyboards featuring a wonderful hammond organ. His debut CD ' Don’t Say A Word', was where his set came from and judging from what I heard it is well worth purchasing. I will hopefully be getting a copy very soon.
Philip Sayce - Guitar & Vocals, Chris Jago - Drums, Joel Gottschalk - Bass , came on the stage . The set list consisted of a mix of tracks from Peace Machine and the new CD, Innerevolution. Blasting off with the double hit of 'One Foot In The Grave' and 'Powerful Thing', from the start I was glad I had the earplugs, he told me the truth earlier IT WAS FKG LOUD!!!!!!!!!!!! Both Philip and Joel were sweating as if they had been in a sauna for three hours, great stuff the crowd really enjoying what they were witnessing. 'Over My Head' completed the opening three track salvo from 'Peace Machine' CD. We were then treated to two new songs from 'Innerevolution', 'Bitter Monday' and 'Changes'. Philip was in a mischievous mood by introducing the brilliant instrumental number 'Alchemy', he said he hoped we recognised the song and to sing along if we knew the words . Philip has a confidence about him on the stage, sometimes using the showmanship like Prince does with his guitar moves, which must have been difficult with the odd shaped stage here at the 100 Club. It is very wide but with about an eight foot depth. Philip also did his walk through the audience on 'SlipAway' so that everyone could get up close , take photos and video , it was exhilurating just watching him. Philip encored with two covers, firstly 'As The Years Go Passing By' by his friend and former employer Jeff Healey, this was one of my favourite songs of the night, beautiful guitar work. It was then followed by Neil Young's 'Cinnamon Girl' , this was his chance to do some guitar damage both aurally and physically, some blistering guitar work. It was a trememdous workout that was leaving people gobsmacked, he used the overhead speakers to run his fretboard up and down, throwing water bottles off the amps in every direction, meanwhile Joel was smacking his bass on the drummers misshapened cymbals. In the last chords of the song he announced the end of the night by tearing off the strings of his battered looking Strat and threw it onto the stage. He then walked off leaving us all staring at the destruction. The last two photos in the gallery below show the tearing of the strings and the remnant on the floor after.
Philip is now moving on to Germany where he has a number of gigs. Philip is one of those guitarists you should see, his style of playing capsulates rock, blues, funk and soul, played with much gusto and passion.
I have heard reliably that he is playing the festival circuit later on in the summer and he is touring the UK in October 2010 . I for one will be the first in the queue for tickets.
