Mitch Laddie is another of the new breed of young British blues prospects, there is a raw talent here that if nurtured in the right way, could go very far indeed. However, his vocals, are generally a tad understrength for the songs, whether that is down to the production or it is his natural voice, and I'm sure will improve in strength and quality, but he is a mighty fine guitarist, which more than makes up for that.
The material is made up of ten originals, which definitely show songwriting strength, a funky cover of James Brown's 'Papas Got A Brand New Bag' and a live workout with Walter Trout on the standard 'Rock Me Baby'. After the frenetic guitar opener 'Awakening' , its the next track that actually wakes me up...a slow blues 'Here's A Drink', a wonderful gentle groove that describes the age old story of whiskey and women. 'I Need Your Love ' follows along in similar vein. 'Get You Back' and 'Float On By' pick up the pace with some good guitar breaks showing Mitchs' prowess on the guitar. Alongside the James Brown cover, the title track gives a great funky guitar workout. 'Miss Supernatural' and ''Two Years' give you the more rock edged guitar songs and are particularly fine. But for me the best tracks on the cd are the glorious instrumental 'Mr Johnson' and the jazz tinged ' All I Have' which to my ears sound like the future of his sound. The band are all excellant on this fine debut, I'm looking forward to hearing more good things in the future and also getting to finally seeing them live.
