This has been a very eagerly awaited release from these lads for a couple of years now and was it worth the wait? You bet it is.
This an extremely high quality cd consisting of eleven tracks with six originals penned by Lindsay Coulson and Alan Nimmo and five arrangements of other songs.
As well as the main musicians on this cd; Alan Nimmo –guitar and Vocals, Lindsay Coulson – bass, Bennett Holland – Keyboards, Craig Blundell – drums, there are also some other fine musicians playing on differing tracks. Giles King, Dale Storr, Wayne Proctor, Ewan Davies, Jacquie Williams and Wonder Brass.
‘Lose Control’ kicks off the cd with a great Rolling Stones style guitar riff that continues through this super opening track, the title track complete with horns and great backing vocals, continues in the same vein of high quality song writing.
‘Feels Like Rain’ is already a live classic in the touring set and it sounds just as good on this cd. The boys have done well with this John Hiatt tune making it their own, which is what covering any song should be about.
‘All Your Life’ is probably, if I had to choose, my favourite song on this cd with a great funky groove to it. The musicianship on this track is terrific from all concerned, all the instruments getting the necessary room to be heard and enjoyed by all who listen.
‘Old Love’ is a cover of the Cray/Clapton song that could have gone very badly for anyone taking it on, not in this case. Some breath-taking guitar from Alan here that just brings a smile to your face when you listen.
‘Mr Highwayman’ shows the influences that the band have in their system, this song is an old Red Devils track that shows no sign of ageing in these lads capable hands.
The cd finishes off with the beautiful track ‘Nothing takes The Place Of You’ very subtle playing on this song from all concerned.
The original songs and the covers chosen all fit in very well together, you wouldn’t really know the difference unless you have the original. Bluesy, funky bordering slightly on jazzy, rocky as well, this cd has it all
This cd is already on the top of my cd’s of 2011 and it will take a very high quality one to dislodge it. King King have laid down a marker to all the others in the genre of blues, blues/rock, play it loud and enjoy the musical craft of King King you will not be disappointed.
