Dave O’Grady has recently signed to Sandi Thom’s Guardian Angels Record label and releases a five track ep called ‘Dirty Little Secret'. All acoustic with a variety of styles from folk, up-tempo blues and just a hint of country.
I have seen Dave play live a couple of times now and was intrigued as to what the finally recorded songs were going to sound like, I was not disappointed. In fact I was very surprised at the high quality of all five songs on here.
Kicking off with the up-tempo‘Bones’ a song about a life’s struggle with one’s conscience that turns out to be anti-war, listen out on this for Sandi on harmonica and backing vocals.
'I (Don’t Want To) Love You', features some lovely brushwork drumming and acoustic guitar on this near ‘country’ song, a lovely gentle song.
‘Walking Through The Desert’ is a song that caught my attention; this is a great tune that has you drifting on the wilderness of lost love. In places you can almost imagine David Gray singing this song.
Dirty Little Secret’ is a beautiful song, mainly featuring acoustic guitar and piano, wonderful lyrics as well ‘I’m not her lover. I’m not her friend. I’m her dirty little secret to the end’.
‘End Of The Line’ is a story capturing the train journey of life and death. This song features a rather good harmonica break from Sandi.
All in all this is a promising release from Dave and I look forward to hearing more from this young talent.
