Los Angeles based singer-songwriter Beth Hart, known for her raw and powerful blues-rock sound, wraps her expressive vocals around classic soul covers on Don’t Explain, an album that grew out of her friendship with the acclaimed Blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa.Produced by Kevin Shirley, Don’t Explain is an intimate collection of hand-picked soul cover versions, as performed by celebrated artists, such as Gil Scott-Heron, Tom Waits, Etta James and Aretha Franklin. This collection perfectly combines Beth Hart’s raspy soulful vocal with Bonamassa’s unique guitar sound, there is gentleness to the way she delivers the most heartfelt tunes that she hasn’t shown before.
Sinner’s Prayer – awesome opener, great guitar riff with Beth’s superb bluesy vocals. Chocolate Jesus – faithful reworking of Tom Wait’s tune, a perfect vehicle for Beth’s vocals. Your Heart Is As Black As Night – pace is slowed for this wonderful sultry song. For My Friend – heavier sounding song, great guitar from Joe and drumming from Anton Figg and bass from Carmine Rojas. Don’t Explain – exquisitely lush production on this song of Billie Holliday’s, again super guitar and string arrangement on this track. I’d Rather Go Blind – this is a superb version of the much covered song, great overall band sound that includes a massive lead guitar break from Joe. Something’s Got A Hold On Me – this song has soul and will sound awesome live, backed by some super keyboards from Arlan Scheirbaum. I’ll Take Care Of You – sublime, sumptuous song and probably my cd favourite, has everything I want from a song. Well, Well – this song has a wonderful infectious groove. Ain’t No Way – slows the pace again featuring some great slide playing from Joe and drum brushwork from Anton.
This is an amazingly cool cd of covers that will be classed as the new benchmark for the genre, all the people involved should be very very proud of what has been achieved here.
